Euchre is a classic card game of trump and taking tricks. Often compared to Spades or Hearts, Euchre is unique in that the trump suit changes every hand. Also, depending on which suit is trump, the jacks have different values. The jack of the trump suit is the highest card, called the 'Right Bower'. The jack of the suit with the same color as trump is the second highest card, called the 'Left Bower'. This card is considered to be the trump suit for that hand. The jacks of the other two suits maintain their normal values and suits. There are only twenty-four cards in the Euchre deck (nine through ace for each suit). Each hand, players are dealt five cards. Four cards are left over (called the 'kitty') and the top one is flipped up. This card is used to decide trump. Once the hand begins, players play their cards, trying to get the highest card of each trick. Players must follow the suit of the first card played, if they can. If they can't, they are free to throw what they choose. The team that takes the majority of tricks in a hand scores. The team that reaches the target score first wins. There are five tricks per hand. A team that called trump and takes three tricks gets one point. If they get all five tricks then they get two points. If they get five tricks while going alone then they get four points. A team that 'Euchres' the other (takes at least three tricks when the other team called trump) gets two points. The first team to score ten points wins. The rules of Euchre can be very different in various regions of the world. This version of the game uses the most common rules used in the north-eastern United States, specifically western New York. In Single Player mode some of the rules can be changed, but in Multi-Player mode, the rules are fixed. In multi-player mode you can play with up to three other people online. More variations to the rules will be added in the future. If you really feel a variation should be included, don't hesitate to let us know! Online Euchre has a variety of themes you can select to alter the appearance of the game. Each theme has a custom deck of cards, as well as multiple screen backgrounds and card backs.
